Merge at Plus Gallery (Friday, free) To celebrate eleven years of Plus Gallery, three artists will be featured in this art show opening tonight. The great thing about it? All the works are small and affordable, so if you count your pennies, you might be able to buy something to take home. Artists Shannon Novak, Matt O'Neill and Eric Shumake will display their works for your perusing and possible purchasing.Mile High Mayhem 15: Quinceañera at Casa Bonita (Friday, free) Casa Bonita's cheese enchiladas followed by a scooter ride seems like a recipe for fun (and maybe a little motion sickness). But that shouldn't deter you. Join Scooter clubs from all over Denver for a ride down Colfax, which ends at Tooey's Off Colfax for a $10 after-party and concert. And don't worry: if you don't want to eat food at the castle of Velveeta, skip the dinner and meet the scooter gang along the way.
Zumba & Happy Feet 2 at Hart Park (Friday, free) Head to Firestone for some exercise, and then reward yourself by watching Happy Feet 2 while lying in the park, eating free popcorn. The movie is a perfect way to pretend you're far away from the heat of Denver and instead hanging with penguins who for some reason are singing Justin Timberlake's "SexyBack."
Guitar Town Preview at Kanon Collective (Friday, free) For next month's Guitar Town, Colorado artists crafted a series of custom=art guitars for a silent auction in Copper Mountain. But if you want to see these beautiful, quirky pieces before they head up to higher elevation, you can at a preview tonight in Denver. Look at (and bid on) twenty new guitars while jazz guitarist Sean McGowan provides the tunes. All proceeds from the auction in August go toward MusicCares.
Watch the Olympics at a television near you (Friday-Sunday, free) Why go out and do physical activity when you can sit inside and watch others do it? Catch up on all the Olympics drama and veg out while you watch buff, beautiful human specimens perform feats you can only dream about. Starting Monday, the Tivoli on the Auraria campus will be hosting Olympic Watching parties, so after a weekend of watching it on your own you can join the rest of the human race for some sports-watching camaraderie.
Kentucky Claus at Denver's Dangerous Theatre (Friday-Sunday, $10 if you mention the Facebook event page) Transport yourself to winter at the Dangerous Theatre this weekend with Kentucky Claus and the Rebel Elves. Not only is this going to be a great way to escape the summer heat, but it's also a way to support the Aurora shooting victims: $5 from every ticket will be donated to the Colorado Organization for Victim Assistance.Hyakkimaru's Kirie World at Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center (Saturday, $8.50-$10) Today will be a unique opportunity to see artist Hyakkimaru demonstrate his kirie, or Japanese paper-cutting, techniques. It's all part of the opening for an exhibition of his work, which depicts Native American warriors.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl at Skyline Park (Saturday, free) There can never be too many movies in parks in the summer. It's great to bring a picnic, sit outside and zone out. And if the movie is lame, who cares? At least you didn't pay $10.50 for it. Denver Parks & Rec's offering this week is the Disneyland ride turned Johnny Depp blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean, so don your best peg leg and eye patch and head over to Skyline Park.
Colorado Dragon Boat Festival at Sloan's Lake (Saturday, free) Eat a variety of delicious foods, make crafts and watch dragon boat races at this annual festival that promotes Asian Pacific American heritage. From the Taste of Asia Food Court to dance and music performances on the main stage, to gawking at celebrity guest Harold & Kumar actor John Cho, there will be plenty to keep you occupied at this vibrant festival.Colorado Cinema Salon: Tastemakers On Taste at the Denver FilmCenter/Colfax (Sunday, $9.75) The art and film words will collide at an interesting discussion today. Three Denver gallery owners -- Robin Rule of Rule Gallery, Tina Goodwin of Goodwin Fine Art and Ivar Zeile of Plus Gallery -- have chosen two films that reflect their taste that they'll show clips from and discuss. It's sure to be a great way to get inside gallery owners' heads and find out about the things that inspire them.
