2010: A Sculptural Odyssey

Mike Whiting’s pixel-inspired minimalist sculptures are all about the evolution of a concept, says Plus Gallery’s Ivar Zeile. “Ever since the first day he entered the gallery carrying this little square plate of steel, he’s really had a full-blown concept in his head that evolved very slowly, which is so integral to it. From last show to this show, he put together a full set of characters straight out of video games. Now he’s starting to take off from that concept in terms of how video-game technology has made the change from simply square objects to things with angles and how the pixel relates to that, pushing into that arena to make forms that are slightly different than before.”

Expect the work in Whiting’s new show, Primitives (his fourth solo at Plus), to advance from Pac-Man-style square grids into triangular shapes evoking the 3-D technology of more modern video-game graphics. But don’t discount the exhibit’s title: These pieces exude a monolithic quality, indicative of the evolutionary process Zeile describes.

Primitives opens with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight and will stay up through November 27; the exhibit coincides with the unveiling of Whiting’s public sculpture “Rhino” at the triangular intersection of Broadway and Larimer Street sometime this month.
