All Four One

Vie for supremacy and a shot at reliving childhood glory on the Connect Four battleground — while drinking beer — at the third annual Connect 4 Kids tournament tonight. “When we started three years ago, there was this resurgence of people in Denver wanting some of that childhood nostalgia,” explains Kiki Nichols, engagement supervisor for event organizer gyro. “We felt like there would be kind of a hunger in Denver to come hang out at a bar and face off in the Connect Four arena.”

Once the last checker has fallen into place, the winner will walk away with a $50 bar tab, a sweet trophy and some serious bragging rights. Since Connect 4 Kids currently holds the world record for the largest Connect Four tournament — with hopes to break its own record this year — the victor has a reasonable claim to being the world’s top player. “In effect, they are the world champion of Connect Four. There’s a lot on the line,” Nichols says.

Plus, it’s a fundraiser for a toddler with a rare medical condition, so even the losers can feel good when it’s all over. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. at Stoney’s Full Steam Tavern, 1434 Blake Street; the entry fee is $20 and includes a free beer, appetizers and a raffle ticket.
