Beer Here

The Beerdrinker of the Year contest will crown its fifteenth champion today at the Wynkoop Brewing Company, which accepts applications from around the country to determine who will be the best ambassador for craft beer. Three finalists have been chosen — from Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia, respectively. Today they’ll stand before judges in powdered wigs and compete in beer knowledge, mock bribes and a “beer whispering,” where finalists have a conversation with a beer.

“Once you get to the finals, you’re kind of on an equal playing field,” explains official Wynkoop cheerleader/idea man Marty Jones, who organizes the event. “So what the judges are looking for is somebody who can convey in the flesh their knowledge of beer and their passion for beer.” Whichever finalist is crowned Beerdrinker of the Year will win free beer for life at the Wynkoop, $250 worth of beer at his local brewpub, and championship apparel.

The finals start this afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Wynkoop, 1634 18th Street; admission is free. Get more info at at www.wynkoop.com.
