The name Edgar Degas conjures up the painter’s iconic images of twirling ballerinas. But the French impressionist had a rich artistic life beyond the barre. A traveling exhibit that lands today at Foothills Art Center will explore other facets of the artist in a display of drawings, prints and photographs, as well of works by some of his nineteenth-century Parisian peers, including Mary Cassatt and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

“You see how curious he was as an artist,” says curator Marianne Lorenz. “He liked to do all different kinds of things — he made prints, he was a sculptor, he was a painter, he was a very beautiful draftsperson. It’s all works on paper — there are no paintings — so it’s works that you don’t often see in museums.”

Edgar Degas: The Private Impressionist will run through June 30 at Foothills Art Center, 809 Fifteenth Street in Golden. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $5 for students under seventeen and free for members; for an extra $5, you can rent an audio tour of the show.
