Su Teatro’s fourteenth annual Neruda Poetry/Spoken Word Festival kicks off tonight with PLACAS, a performance combines spoken word, hip-hop and theater that's written by visiting artist Paul S. Flores, directed by Michael John Garcés and stars Ric Salinas of the performance group Culture Clash. “Paul did a lot of research on youth who were a part of Salvadorean gangs in San Francisco. And a lot of them were kids whose parents had fled the violence of El Salvador in the late ’70s and ’80s during the civil war,” says Tanya Mote, associate director at Su Teatro. “It’s a story about these folks who were refugees, who came to the U.S. to escape violence and ended up getting involved with violence in this country for the same reasons a lot of kids become involved with gangs — because they were looking for a sense of belonging.”

The play will run through Sunday, with performances at 7:30 p.m. tonight through Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Sunday. And at 7 p.m. Friday, the annual Barrio Slam! will fill another space at Su Teatro, 721 Santa Fe Drive. For more information on the festival, visit suteatro.org or call 303-296-0219.
