Celebrate Mother's Day late at an Artistic Mamas arty party

Jacquie Van Horne believes that artists who are mothers, too, need to stick together, because -- as she writes on her Facebook page -- "Motherhood is not the time to put the paintbrush down." That's why she created Artistic Mamas, which is as much a celebration of mothers who paint and sing and dance and write as it is a simple support network for imaginative women who must balance parenting and art in their lives.

It's also the undercurrent and driving force behind Artistic Mamas Presents: A Gathering of Women Artists, a joyful art and craft exhibit and performance showcase for a whole village of creative local women.

The event's fine art gallery and craftswomen exhibit both open tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Su Teatro at the Denver Civic Theater; performances in many disciplines, from live painting and spoken word to dance and instrumental music, begin at at 5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online in advance for $7 or two for $12 and the price goes up to $10 each at the door. Visit the Facebook event page for details.

KEEP WESTWORD FREE... Since we started Westword, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Denver, and we'd like to keep it that way. With local media under siege, it's more important than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" program, allowing us to keep offering readers access to our incisive coverage of local news, food and culture with no paywalls.
Susan Froyd started writing for Westword as the "Thrills" editor in 1992 and never quite left the fold. These days she still freelances for the paper in addition to walking her dogs, enjoying cheap ethnic food and reading voraciously. Sometimes she writes poetry.
