While the thriving arts districts within Denver city limits will be rocking tonight as Denver Arts Week kicks off with Know Your Arts First Friday, one of the newest kids on the block, the 40 West Arts District, will be touting the local artists of...Lakewood, our suburban neighbor to the west. The district, still finding its feet along West Colfax Avenue, is anchored by the Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design and the 40 West Art Gallery, which will eventually front an enclave of studios.

Van Gogh Goes West, a group exhibit inspired by the Denver Art Museum's Becoming Van Gogh show, will be celebrated at the gallery this evening with a reception and live music from 5 to 9 p.m.; the show continues through November 17. And next weekend, the space will open up further to host a daylong Arts Harvest Market on Saturday, November 10, featuring handmades of all kinds -- from glass beads to knitted wristlets -- created in Lakewood by local artists.

Keep Westword Free... Since we started Westword, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Denver, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Denver with no paywalls.
