Things to Do

Denver County Fair: Viva Denver Gets Loco on Sunday

The second annual Denver County Fair is already under way, and in honor of the fact that one-third of Denver County's population is Latino, one-third of this year's fair will be Latino.

From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, the fair will be devoted to Viva Denver, a celebration of Latino culture. The fun starts with Andrew Novick's X-Treme Breakfast Burrito, and the activities continue with chihuahuas and iguanas in the Animal Pavilion, a multi-pavilion Pinata Bash event, a Sopapilla Toss open competition (Casa Bonita is participating in this year's fair), Dia de Los Muertos face painters and more. We asked Enrique Jimenez, local guitar hero and Viva Denver coordinator, to tell us a bit about the day. Unfortunately, we forgot to ask one vital question: How do you say 'hipster' en espanol?

Westword:What was the inspiration behind the Viva Denver celebration? What are the highlight's of the days events, in your estimation?

Enrique Jimenez: Piñata bashing will definitely be fun. It's not as easy as you think. Mexican luchadores, ballet folklorico and mariachis will round out the traditional. Sugar-skull making and the Chupa Mi Cabra Latin dance party will also be a hit.

The schedule includes an iguana beauty competition. What makes a beautiful iguana? Do you expect the competition to be fierce?

A beautiful iguana has confidence and poise. I hear some are being flown in from southern Mexico. So, yeah, it'll be fierce. You'll just have to come down and judge for yourself.

There will be a Casa Bonita sopapilla toss. Is it in any way sacrilege for people to throw perfectly good sopapillas at each other?

As long as they get eaten afterward, we're all good.

Where did you find Mago Saulin, the Spanish-language ventriloquist? He's a fixture in Denver's Spanish-speaking community, regularly doing large events such as DCF and private events, like my birthday party. The Denver County Fair runs today through Sunday, August 12, at the National Western Complex. For a full schedule, visit the Denver County Fair.
