The twelfth annual Chicano Music Festival and Auction at El Centro Su Teatro unites people using universally good things: beer, burgers and live music under the stars — so you’re bound to find something here that speaks to you, no matter what your feelings on south-of-the-border tunes. One of three festivals that the center puts on during the year, the music festival features both classic and modern takes on Chicano music, particularly conjunto and mariachi. “They’re all dancehall kinds of music, but they differ in style, instruments and speed,” says John Kuebler, El Centro’s communications associate. Today is geared toward the older generation of music; tomorrow features a more Americanized, rocking sound; Saturday brings the more different takes on the conjunto sound, including a zydeco band and popular Juarez group Fuga; and Sunday winds down with a return to the more classic mariachi sounds.
