Tickets for Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire, the critically acclaimed, buzz-generating film that opens the Denver Film Festival on November 12, sold out a while ago; in fact, it was the fastest opening-night sellout in film-festival history (Westword will run a full review of Precious next week, when it opens more widely in theaters here). And for good reason. Not only is the story of Claireece “Precious” Jones a compelling one, but the movie was produced by Denverites Sarah Siegel-Magness and Gary Magness (part of the Magness cable-TV empire). But Precious isn’t the only film at this year’s fest with Colorado connections. More than twenty of this year’s flicks have ties to the state.

For starters, there’s Hick Town, a DNC-era documentary about Mayor John Hickenlooper, made by his cousin George Hickenlooper; Two Spirits, about the murder of transgendered Navajo teenager Fred Martinez in Cortez; and Con Artist, an edgy docu-comedy about artist Mark Kostabi that was made for former Colorado resident Michael Sladek. Beyond that are a host of other documentaries and shorts that were either shot in Colorado or include Colorado actors, directors, producers or staff. And then there’s Official Rejection, a lighthearted doc about film festivals themselves. The flick examines the “politics, pitfalls, costs and tolls taken on life at the independent film festivals.” Its makers, Paul Osborne and Leslie Wimmer, are from Denver.
