Yan came up with the idea of turning folks into zombies on paper while making rounds at various comic cons; he’s now perfected the art, which it clearly is. But it’s also an out, he notes: “As a caricaturist, I feel less pressure, since you’re not supposed to look good as a zombie. I can just go ahead and make them look ugly.” And how does he find each person’s inner zombie? “First I ask people what kind of injury, rot or infestation they want or don’t want. So if they don’t like maggots, I won’t give them maggots. And I have some recurring themes for two-person zombiecatures: There’s the victim/zombie theme, or two zombies eating each other — or my other standard, family portraits.”
