Though the Denver Art Museum has collected photos for decades, it didn't launch a proper photography department until 2008, when Eric Paddock was named curator. Since then, Paddock has presented one noteworthy show after another, most of them showcasing pieces in the DAM's impressive collection -- and that includes Women Are Beautiful, the new exhibit comprising fifty photos by the legendary Garry Winogrand that were collected into a famous book of the same name.

Walking the streets of cities and towns across the United States, Winogrand took thousands of candid shots of people, with women just one of the many topics he took on. "Winogrand mastered the art of lightning-fast, intuitive photography by walking the streets with his Leica at the ready," explains Paddock. "Women Are Beautiful is a snapshot of the late '60s and early '70s that celebrates the beauty of ordinary people going on about their lives."

The Winogrand show opens at 10 a.m. this morning in the Delisa and Anthony Mayer Gallery on the seventh floor of the Ponti Building at 100 West 14th Avenue Parkway, where it will remain on display through July 8. For more information, call 720-865-5000 or go to www.denverartmuseum.org.
