Mountain people love their pups, and the denizens of Breckenridge are no exception. For that reason, the town’s Breckenridge Backstage Theatre is celebrating the holiday season with the regional premiere of Dog Park: The Musical, a family-friendly walk in the park that has nothing to do with Christmas and everything to do with dogs.

Backstage director Christopher Willard, who says he’s done every kind of holiday show under the sun, is changing direction in 2014 with “something small and fun and different.” And while there are no actual dogs — or even dog costumes — in the show, four actors portray protagonist pooches Champ, Bogie, Itchy and Daisy, who all get mixed up in a singles club called Lovers With Leashes. “They are all versatile dog people,” Willard promises of the cast, noting that challenges they face in their roles include “getting into the canine mindset and finding physical ways of conveying the stunts.” Throw in a delightful score of ’30s and doo-wop-style music, and you’ve got the makings of one holiday romp that comes with no bow on top. “Embrace the difference and the fact that it’s a non-holiday show,” Willard says.

Dog Park, a perfect diversion after a day on the slopes, opens tonight at 7:30 p.m. and runs through January 3 at the Breckenridge Theatre, 121 South Ridge Street in Breckenridge. For tickets, $20 to $30, and information, visit backstage.org or call 970-453-0199.
