Today is the first day of Kwanzaa, the seven-day celebration of the humanist principles of Nguzo Saba. Each day is thematic and replete with Afrocentric spoken word, craftmaking, music, dance, games and the pouring of libations.
Celebrations for Umoja (Unity) day commence at 1 p.m. at the Blair-Caldwell African-American Research Library (2401 Welton Street) with storytelling by Jali Opalanga; at 6 p.m., the first of the nocturnal lightings of the Grand Kinara takes place in front of Blackberries Ice Cream & Coffee Lounge (710 East 26th Avenue). Revelers will then join the Pamoja Parade to Cleo Parker Robinson’s studios at 119 Park Avenue West, and later tonight, Cafe Nuba will host an entertainment finale at 2549 Welton Street.
