Some parents consider this the worst week of the year: Kids are underfoot and bored with their holiday loot, but it's often too cold to kick them out of the house without spending time bundling them up -- and meanwhile, grownups are busy trying to pull themselves together for New Year's Eve. Instead of consigning the kids to another day of mundane cartoons on the idiot box, why not treat them to an afternoon of acclaimed, high-quality, age-specific cartoons on the big screen? The Dairy Center for the Arts' state-of-the-art Boedecker Theater in Boulder has the perfect one-two punch: a pair of programs roughly an hour long that feature award-winning animation and short films from the New York International Children's Film Festival, showing every afternoon through December 31. The Kid Flix Mix is geared toward the three-to-six set, while the Party Mix compilation is meant to appeal to kids ages seven to fourteen; both offer a kaleidoscopic view of the world from around the globe.

That should dazzle them into submission, at least for one afternoon. The Dairy Center is at 2590 Walnut Street in Boulder, and tickets are $10. Go to http://thedairy.org or call 303-444-7328 for a complete schedule.
