The charitable event, complete with sock puppets and special guests, has gone through many subtle changes over the years, but this year is the first time the show will go on without fellow founder Melanie Padilla. No worries: Emily K. Harrison, the theatrical whirlwind from Boulder's Square Product Theatre, will be standing in this year, which is great, Trevathan notes, because “Melanie and Emily have the same syllabic formation.” Other than that, you can expect all-new material, but delivered with the same gooey, funny, warmhearted punch.
“We've always tried to keep Balls! very accessible – and that's not just cheap tickets, but also, you don't have to put on a fancy dress and uncomfortable shoes and behave yourself and stifle yawns,” Trevathan says of the annual date-night favorite. “It's about having a good time. And everybody can be a philanthropist; you don't have to be wealthy or connected.”
Laugh, cry and sing along with a sock puppet at 7 p.m. tonight and again on December 15 at Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret, 1601 Arapahoe Street; tickets are $18 in advance or $22 at the door and benefit the Denver Actors Fund. Go to lannies.com for reservations and details.
