Here's Jose's artist's statement:
My design for Ms. Payton was inspired by her interest in beauty, art and architecture. So, I decided to create a very feminine style with simplicity, the feeling of air, the beauty of proportion, and the minimal allure of a tailored ensemble.
I visited the museum website to see her favorite building, and found a beautiful structure. The feature that attracted me the most were the crystal mirrors on the building. I pictured in my mind a mix of city and earthy colors being reflected in a small lake, as it would the mixture of texture, color, and proportion on the dress with the new building as a background.
My design incorporates the reflective mirrored building in a bodice of grey silk satin with a shawl collar and ¾-length sleeve. The bodice is gathered into a fitted midriff of textured lightweight suiting material of earth colors in brown, black, gray and tan, with accents of brick red. The detail of the midriff yoke includes metal fasteners on the side.
The knee-length tailored pencil skirt has lovely curved side pockets and slits at the hem for easy movement. Underneath the dress is a double-layered sheer silk chiffon sleeveless top of brick red with a neck band that ties in the front to draw attention to Ms. Payton’s beautiful face.
I believe this dress can take Ms. Payton from her professional career in the Museum of Contemporary Art to a night on the town in Denver!
