First there was “A Quick One While He’s Away,” Then an Alley, S.F. Sorrow, Tommy and Quadrophenia. Then there was Jesus Christ Superstar. And opening tonight for its world premiere at the New Denver Civic Theatre, 721 Santa Fe Drive, is Magdalene, Woman of Light.

Following the story of Mary Magdalene -- arguably the most controversial female figure in history -- Magdalene takes the audience from Mary’s birth in Egypt and early training as a high priestess to the search for her beloved Jesus Christ. The rock musical examines Christ’s elevation of Mary as the first apostle -- and what that did to her relations with the other apostles -- as well as the effect Jesus and Mary’s relationship had on themselves, their world and our modern world 2,000 years later.
