Denver’s large Latino population ensures plenty of Day of the Dead activities in these parts, but there are few as perfectly distilled as tonight’s Día de los Muertos Procession on Santa Fe Drive, which goes straight back to the root of the holiday that honors the dead in an upbeat way. It starts tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Chicano Humanities and Arts Council, which is partnering with other community honchos on the block, including El Centro Su Teatro, Museo de las Américas and NEWSED for a traditional candlelight procession on Santa Fe Drive. Folks are invited to arrive early for face painting before following the Grupo Tlaloc Aztec dancers for a march down the street, with a stop at the Museo for a dance performance and altar viewing; afterward, everyone will end up back at CHAC for the time-honored treats of Mexican chocolate and pan de muerto. And while they’re there, participants will also have a chance to bid on artist-created skulls made for the gallery’s annual Día de los Muertos art show.
