Looking Good in Lyons

The 7th annual Lyons Outdoor Games, which kicks off today, includes kayaking events in the Lyons Whitewater Park, a skateboard contest at Kurt Carlson Skatepark, BMX racing and dirt jumping at Lyons Bike Park, fly-fishing clinics along the St. Vrain River, and dog competitions like Speed Retrieve and Canine Cannonball.

But be sure to pack your formal attire alongside your paddles and pads so you can participate in a new themed event, the Dash and Bash Trail Race and Run Like a Mother. “We’re expecting to see tuxedos, prom dresses, sequins, feather boas — the whole nine yards,” says Marily MacDonald, spokeswoman for Outdoor Divas, which is sponsoring the event. “But I’ll feel sorry for any divas who show up in high heels.”

The formal 5K begins on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Sandstone Park (pre-registration is $20; on-site registration is $25), followed by an after-party at Oskar Blues Brewery that should put your high school dance memories to sweaty shame. Nurse your hangover and polyester chafing at the River Cleanup and Volunteer Breakfast on Sunday morning, then catch the Kayak Pro Freestyle Finals at noon for the figurative fireworks. To register for the 5K, or just to get all the details, visit www.lyonsoutdoorgames.com.
