Plenty of theater-goers, feminists and activists know about Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues, which has been presented in venues of all sizes and shapes around the world. But if you’ve seen that hardly subtle production, you might be surprised by Ensler’s “other” play, The Good Body, which covers similar territory — personal battles with body image — in a more traditionally dramatic way. Edith Weiss directs a new production of The Good Body, which opens tonight at the Avenue Theater, 417 East 17th Avenue. A strong cast — Megan Van De Hey, Emily Paton Davies and Lisa Rosenhagen — stars in a series of vignettes that cross many lines and borders, from a fat farm in Italy to the inner sanctum of a vulva-appreciation group. “I think of Good Body as a funny, provocative, sometimes shocking, funny again yell for sanity,” says Weiss. “I don’t think there is a woman out there who won’t relate to this play. Men would do themselves a favor to see it, too, and no, there’s no nudity.”
