It's a trick to write a funny book that's truly funny; it's even more of one to write a comic novel. Christopher Moore has mastered both, bringing well-wrought characters and situations together in an equally well-spun tale that dips below the surface of life in a string of hilarious, cult-enticing books. His latest, Sacre Bleu: A Comedy d'Art has a plot that entwines Van Gogh's suicide with the mysterious appearance of a tube of the perfect ultramarine-blue pigment. Set in the artist's milieu of late-nineteenth-century France, the book is more than destined for popularity among Moore's fanatical fans, but it's perhaps also bound for wider approval, if only because of its cast of famous characters, from Henri Toulouse-Lautrec to Claude Monet, and the mystery inherent in its plot.

Moore will hit the Tattered Cover LoDo, 1628 16th Street, tonight at 7:30 p.m. to share some wit and sign copies of Sacre Bleu; free numbered tickets for a place in the signing line will be given out at 6:30 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis and are required for seating for the reading. Get more information at www.tatteredcover.com or call 303-436-1070.
