We’ve all heard the classic children’s tale of Peter Pan, the flying boy who wouldn’t grow up, but how did he get that way? That story is brought to light in Peter and the Starcatcher, the Broadway musical inspired by the kids’ bestseller by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. As should be expected, there are pirates, the fairy Tinkerbell, a band of Lost Boys and even a girl — this one’s Molly, not Wendy — and it involves an adventure, but this one’s aimed directly at grownups and, at the very least, young adults.

Intrigued? Starcatcher’s national tour kicks off tonight at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, giving local audiences a first-in-line oppor-tunity to surrender to their imaginations. We all know, after all — wink, wink — that Peter is but a metaphor for the adventures that dwell within us. And as a side note, the tour’s proscenium was fashioned from recycled materials donated by various cities along the tour route, including a pirate’s booty of Coors bottle caps from Denver, so look carefully and see if you can spot one.

Peter and the Starcatcher plays daily except Mondays at the Ellie, in the Denver Performing Arts Complex, through September 1; for tickets, $20 to $105, go to denvercenter.org or call 303-893-4100.
