The tradition of Oktoberfest began in Bavaria in 1810 as a royal festival, but has evolved over the years into a multiweek celebration of beer. And while there are rules regarding which breweries can participate in Munich, U.S. celebrations have typically included any old beer maker who wants to sponsor an event. That’s changed over the past few years as local craft breweries have gotten into the act, holding their own festivities across the state. Three of these craft-centric parties will take place this weekend.

“Oktoberfest brings back feelings of tradition and connecting with neighbors,” says Emily Armstrong of Longmont’s Left Hand Brewing, which is heading up that city’s party. “It’s a great kickoff to fall and it celebrates beer, and we like that a lot.”

The fest runs from 4 to 10 p.m. today and noon to 10 p.m. tomorrow in Roosevelt Park in Longmont. Free and open to all ages, it will feature live music, German-themed activities, and beers from Left Hand, Oskar Blues and other breweries. There will also be best-dressed, stein-holding and bratwurst-eating contests. Get more information at lefthandbrewing.com.

In Denver, Lowry Beer Garden, 7577 East Academy Boulevard, hosts its second annual Oktoberfest, bringing lederhosen, beer liters and German food back from 6:30 to 10 p.m. today and tomorrow (and again next weekend), with live music from oompah bands and a mini-tap takeover by Odell Brewing. (Anyone wearing a German dirndl or lederhosen gets his or her first beer free.) Get information at lowrybeergarden.com.

And finally, Grimm Brothers Brewhouse in Loveland has expanded its annual Oktoberfest into a two-day community festival and moved it to the Foote Lagoon Amphitheater and Park. It runs today from 3 to 9 p.m. and tomorrow from noon to 9 p.m. and includes beer from several breweries, as well as bands, dancing, beer games, children’s activities, and Austrian and German food vendors and artisans.
