To help hapless daters from getting burned, we've now introduced the weekly "It's a Date," in which we create an itinerary for a date that has a shot at success (or at least will take you to some interesting places). Our first offering was a casual Friday night on the town; our second answered this question: "If I had a sugar daddy, where would I make him take me?"
But our answer inspired some sour responses from readers on the Westword Instagram and Westword Facebook pages. Says Alan:
It was not too long ago that Westword posted an article stating that women in the state are having a hard time finding a partner. Now I see why.Adds Graeme:
Men are obviously expected to change their roles in society to be more accommodating to a partner, but women (by example of this article) are still encouraged to freeload. So, Westword, after a sugar date, which motels or hotels do you suggest? 'Cause seeing that you are implying that certain things are expectations. I'm sure some sugar daddies wanna know where to go after having their money spent, to get what they expect. Seeing that the sugar dating scene is based on transactions.
Why is he taking you anywhere? You’re a trick. He’s a mark. Shut up and quit romanticizing your “relationship.” He should take you to the bedroom and get you an uber home. You don’t pay for sex, you pay for her to go home.Observes Gavin:
I'm sure you were giddy and laughing at the cute "Take advantage of the sugar daddy idea," but what it really does is foster the pernicious and corrosive idea that men are simply ATMs to be exploited while dating. Turn the tables and imagine if the title were, "Sugar daddies, here are the best hotels to poke your pincushion after a spendy, trendy date!" See?Wonders Jill:
In the interest of equal time, will you offer advice for dates with sugar mamas next?Offers Walt:
I always take my sugar mamas to my air drumming competitions; then drinks on their dime. And Lauren concludes:
Wow. This was honestly embarrassing to read.Maybe the third time will be a charm. Have an upcoming date you'd like us to help create? Send a note to [email protected], where you can also comment on our sugar daddy suggestions.
