Red Light Special

The documentary Born Into Brothels, a portrait of Calcutta’s red light district, will be shown tonight at 7 p.m. at Buntport Theater, 717 Lipan Street. The widely acclaimed film, written and directed by Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman, won a string of accolades, including the Academy Award for Documentary Feature in 2004. Briski, a New York-based photographer, gave the children of several prostitutes cameras and taught them to record the world around them; the film also shows Briski’s struggle to enroll some of the kids in boarding schools.

There is no fixed admission price, but donations are welcome and will go to Hope House, a safe haven in India for girls born into brothels. RSVP to Kelli Modica at [email protected] or call 262-960-6616. For more about Hope House visit
