That’s certainly the case with her latest, a film series she’s calling Woman Made: Films Directed by Women, presented by Fresh City Life at the Denver Central Library. “I have a great love of film,” Slater says, “and I really wanted to choose some of my favorite films that all share similar feminist themes and have these strong young female characters.” Tonight, she’ll screen Antonia’s Line (which took the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1996), a Dutch story of five generations of matriarchy that Slater calls “sort of a feminist fairy tale.” She’ll follow that next week with Persepolis, the animated film about a young girl set during the Iranian revolution, and Whip It, a Drew Barrymore-directed story about roller derby, the week after that.

All screenings (besides the fourth “mystery” film Slater says she’ll announce at a later date) take place at the Denver Central Library, 10 West 14th Avenue Parkway, from 2 to 4 p.m. Sundays and are accompanied by a discussion afterward; all are free to attend.
