For the past month Westword has been profiling the winners of the 2012 Mayor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts. Since 1986 these awards have honored creative individuals and organizations that make artful impact in the community -- but this year they were split into three new categories: Youth Arts, Entrepreneurial Arts and Impact Arts. The awards ceremony for the winners -- Denver's Arts District on Santa Fe, Emmanuel Gallery and Denver Ballet Guild -- will be held tonight at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Kirk Montgomery, 9News reporter and an artist (photographer) in his own right, will take place in the Studio Loft at the Opera House. There will be a presentation by First Lady Mary Louise Lee; performances by the Colorado Children's Chorale and Su Teatro; as well as an excerpt from Ballet Nouveau and Paper Bird's "Carry On." The event is free and open to the public.

Keep Westword Free... Since we started Westword, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Denver, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Denver with no paywalls.
