Safe Is Sexy

To celebrate its fortieth anniversary, the nonprofit Boulder Valley Women’s Health Clinic wanted to do something unexpected. So tonight at the Boulder Theater, the organization will present Condom Couture, a fashion show benefiting the clinic and its community work. And, as at any runway show, models will grace the catwalk showcasing a designer’s work — except that every garment shown here will be made from condoms.

One Condoms donated 14,000 condoms for designers and teams from the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design to use, and they’ve all been hard at work over the past few weeks making formal-wear out of the donated prophylactics, as well as female condoms and dental dams. “We want to convey the message of safe sex in a very fun, positive and upbeat way,” says the clinic’s Suzy Gardner. “I think it calls attention to who we are. We are about preventing unplanned pregnancy and [promoting] safe sex.”

Designer Brandi Shigley will emcee the event, which includes a well-stocked silent auction; all proceeds will go to the clinic’s services and teen-outreach programs. Doors open at 7 p.m. at the theater, 2032 14th Street in Boulder; for tickets, $20 to $100, and information, visit bouldertheater.com/condom-coutoure.
