Investigative sustainability journalist and solar-power-using goatherder Doug Fine says that the hardest part about researching and discussing his new book, Hemp Bound: Dispatches From the Front Lines of the Next Agricultural Revolution, is “trying not to sound like your college roommate with the lava lamp.” Because those wavy-gravy types had it right all along: Hemp is one of the most versatile and utilitarian plants on the face of the planet, and Fine thinks it’s going to change the world.

That’s the premise of Hemp Bound, in which Fine gives readers a history lesson, then discusses tri-cropping: “three ways that farmers, processors and investors can immediately profit from hemp while helping wean humanity from fossil fuels,” he explains. “That’s fibers; seed oil, which will help us get away from damaging petrol-based plastics; and energy through biomass combustion.” And that’s particularly pertinent in our state. “Anybody in Colorado who wants to learn the ins and outs of what’s going to be the fast-est-growing industry in Colorado’s history should come to this event,” he says. “Your state is leading the world in an agricultural revolution.”

Fine will read from and sign Hemp Bound at the Boulder Book Store, 1107 Pearl Street in Boulder, at 7:30 p.m. tonight, and at the same time tomorrow at the Tattered Cover, 2526 East Colfax Avenue; visit boulderbookstore.net or tatteredcover.com for details.
