Send in the Clowns

Buntport Theater Company is getting cocky as it continues the Versus series, in which the group calls out local entertainment companies and challenges them to do what they do best — before Buntport attempts to do it better. Buntport has previously scored victories over the Swallow Hill Choir, the Flobots and a burlesque troupe.

This month’s contender is the Roustabouts Circus, a one-ring version of an old-time circus. “It’s a four-person circus that does trapeze, acrobalance and clowning,” says Buntport player Samantha Schmitz. “People work on this stuff their entire lives, and we’re trying to learn it in a month. We are really trying not to break ourselves.”

Starting tonight at 8 p.m. at Buntport, 717 Lipan Street, Versus: The Roustabouts Circus includes a fifteen-minute performance by each group and then an audience vote to determine the winner. In addition, there will be documentary footage of team Buntport preparing for the competition, as well as warm-up challenges. “We’re really going to stick with the clowning and then see if we can sneak in some aerial stuff. None of us have even tried anything like this before,” says Schmitz. “I think we have a good chance of winning — either through pity or for real.”
