First it was the prospect of a female president. Now it’s a shot at a woman veep. Many would argue that women have rarely been more empowered. But those are women with senatorial seats and pantsuits, women who eat barreled pork for breakfast. What about minority women, low-wage women, every-damn-day women? For them, there’s today’s fourth annual Serious Women, Serious Issues, Serious Action Conference.

“Every year, our goal is to educate women of color about issues that are important to women,” says Maria De Cambra, program director for Latina Initiative, one of the organizing groups. “We also give them the tools to create their own agenda and hopefully take action.”

This year’s focus is on electoral issues, specifically Colorado Amendments 46 through 49 (among others). Young women ages fourteen to eighteen are strongly encouraged to attend and take part in the Young Women’s Track. And Rubi Nicholas, one of Nickelodeon’s Funniest Moms in America, will be there. Hilarious.

The conference runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Tivoli Student Union on the Auraria campus; registration is $5. Get more information at www.latinainitiative.org or by calling 303-572-2241.
Sat., Sept. 27, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., 2008
