Shoot First

What could you create in the time it takes for Earth to revolve on its axis? If the answer is “not much,” then you’re selling yourself short. Every year, teams of filmmakers create a short, seven-minute film in only one day for the annual Shoot Out Boulder, which kicked off Friday in front of the Boulder County Court House.

Here’s how it works: Contestants must edit their film in-camera, and the films must include five of eleven secret elements announced at the start of the Shoot Out. After the 24 hours is up, teams hand in the shorts to be judged and possibly selected for the Gala Screening Event. Only the top ten films will make it onto the big screen for the gala, which takes place today from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Boulder Theater, 2032 13th Street in Boulder. Tickets are $15; visit or call 303-786-7030.
