Steamed Punks

Steampunk is all about “what could have been” fictions, with dirigibles flying through the air, steam-powered mechs battling cowboys, and pocket watches telling the time. And it’s not as niche as you might think, as plenty of popular films and novels from both the past and the present have delved into the fantastic alternate-history world. The first-ever AnomalyCon plans to celebrate all of it this weekend.

“We’ll have a lot of different things going on,” says organizer Kronda Seibert, the chair of Victorian Productions. “Beginners and professionals will find a lot to enjoy.” Activities will include a Victorian self-defense class, a build-your-own-steampunk-gun class, some live-action role-playing and a costume ball, as well as lectures and panels featuring local and national steampunk authors and artists. Regardless of your bronzing aptitude or your skill at curling mustaches, you should find plenty to keep yourself busy throughout the convention, which kicks off at 8 a.m. today and runs through tomorrow at the Tivoli Student Union, on the Auraria campus.

Tickets, $25, will be available at the door; for more information and a full schedule of events, go to www.anomalycon.com.
