“Collage has such an interesting history, starting with Picasso and Braque,” notes Cullen. “It’s gone through so many art movements, and it hasn’t ever gone away. Now it seems to be in resurgence, and maybe that’s because of the multimedia world we’re living in. With all the sensory overload, collage is a way to put that into analog form.”
As the viewer, your job is to observe how the participating artists — including a contingent of local collagists — artfully condense the firestorm of incoming information into aesthetic compositions. Even within the medium, you’ll see countless approaches, from the incorporation of collage in paintings to the use of digital media (although the inclusion of glue is a requirement of every work in the show).
