It used to be that most people would hide their garish holiday sweaters, but nowadays they embrace the eye-searing excesses of Christmas cardigans as both iconic and ironic — and wear them proudly wherever they can. One of those places is at the Ugly Sweater Run, which, in addition to the run itself, offers contests for everything from best mustache to ugliest sweater, hot-chocolate aid stations and plenty of reindeer games. And while horrible holiday attire is mandatory, being an actual runner is not.

“It’s just an excuse to burn a couple calories, then drink a winter lager when you cross the finish line,” quips Jeff Suffolk, the president of Human Movement Management, which organized the Ugly Sweater Run.

The race starts at 9 a.m. today in City Park (look for the giant Santa, holiday trees, and thousands of people in ugly-ass sweaters). Get there as early as 7 a.m. to pick up your packet — including hat, mustache and pint glass — or, better yet, pick one up on Friday between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. at Lucky Pie, 1610 16th Street.

Registration is $35, or register as a team of four or more for just $30 each. For information, go to theuglysweaterrun.com.
