Sweet and Spicy

The lineup for the musical act Tijuana Sweetcakes reads like a who’s who of Denver’s cabaret scene: Kim Franco on vocals, piano and percussion; Dario Rosa on vocals and guitar; Jon Gray on vocals, piano and trumpet; Paul Mrozak on vocals and bass; Zack Littlefield on drums; and Jefferson Arca as emcee Naughty Pierre. The description of their music sounds like something you could only find in a much larger city, an amalgamation of old-timey blues, Latin, country, lounge and mariachi styles. And the Sweetcakes’ set list could easily be the soundtrack to some of your favorite, more whimsical dreams, ones in which you might hear Billy Idol’s “Dancing With Myself” or the Isley Brothers’ “Shout!”

And when you throw in the costumes, puppets, humor and a burlesque dancer or two…well, you’ve got a show truly unlike any other. Tijuana Sweetcakes takes the stage at Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret, 1601 Arapahoe Street, tonight at 11 p.m.; doors open at 10:45, and tickets are $5. Call 303-293-0075 or visit www.lannies.com.
Fridays, 11 p.m. Starts: July 18. Continues through Sept. 26, 2008
