The Bombs Bursting in Air

For the biggest display of patriotic pyrotechnics in the state, don't miss the Colorado Rapids 4thFest show at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, 6000 Victory Way in Commerce City, where relatively lax noise and air-space restrictions and a partnership with Zambelli Fireworks Internationale make for an explosive combination.

The Rapids (Major League Soccer's reigning MLS Cup champions) face the Houston Dynamo at 7 p.m., followed by fireworks at 9:30 p.m.; a free pre-game party outside the gates starts at 5 p.m., featuring the 4thFest Family Activity Zone and music performances by the Andy Hackbarth Duo and Funkiphino. Order tickets through the home-page link at to make sure that $5 of the $25 ticket price goes to support this year's Nonprofit of the Match.

"We're excited about our new partnership with the Colorado Rapids, and were recently honored to have some of the players come out to the Crossing, our transitional living program, to do a soccer camp with the kids in our youth center," says Denver Rescue Mission spokeswoman Alexxa Tavlarides. "This is the Rapids' biggest game of the season, and we'll make the most of every $5 donation we can get. We’re on track to provide 700,000 meals and 171,000 nights of shelter this year, in addition to helping cover emergency needs and transitional housing as we try to break the cycle of poverty in our city.”
