The Numbers Game

Back in 2009, comedian and actor Paul F. Tompkins was having trouble filling a venue in Atlanta, so he used his Twitter account to rally support. The ploy worked, and somewhere in the middle of it all, a fan made another request: “Why don’t you come to Toronto?” Tompkins replied, “You get 300 people to say they’ll come see me in Toronto, and I’ll go to Toronto.” The man did, and that started a series of fan-booked shows dubbed “The Tompkins 300”: If you can get 300 people in your city to commit to a show through a Facebook group, Tompkins will come and entertain you with his wit and wisdom.

The Gothic Theatre’s general manager, Kent Shelton, started the Denver group. “A little after I started it, Paul F. Tompkins reached out to me and said we had to get over 300 because his last experience in Colorado was so lackluster,” Shelton remembers. “At around 350, we started talking details.” And here are those details: Doors open at 8:00 p.m. tonight for the Paul F. Tompkins show at the Gothic Theatre, 3263 South Broadway in Englewood; tickets are $20. For more information, go to or call 303-788-0984.
