Denver's a great place for fans of the big five of genre film (that's sci-fi, fantasy, horror, exploitation and cult), as every week we get a generous helping of selections to choose from. As usual, we're rounding up your options for the weekend to come and the following week, and making a recommendation of one can't-miss film. This week, we get one of the creepiest kid vampires of all time.
Pick of the Week: Let the Right One In Where: Starz FilmCenter, Tivoli building on the Auraria Campus When: 10 p.m. Friday, September 24, and Saturday, September 25 Why?: Let the Right One In is a dark, thoughtful story of a pre-teen boy, the bullies that plague him and a little vampire girl that only wants to help him. A different kind of vampire film, this one will leave you thinking about it for days afterward. It's Swedish, so you might have to read a little, but it sure beats watching the sure-to-be-inferior US remake. More info/tickets: DenverFilm.org
Pee Wee's Big Adventure Where: Esquire Theatre, 600 Downing Street When: Midnight Friday, September 24, Saturday, September 25 Why?: Before Tim Burton was a household name, he directed Pee Wee's Big Adventure, the story of a boy who loves his bike and faces great peril to get it back. It's a whimsical, engaging film that's probably the best story Burton's ever told, and it looks amazing on the big screen. More info/Tickets: LandmarkTheatres.com
Rocky Horror Picture Show Where: Esquire Theatre, 600 Downing Street When: Midnight, Friday, September 24 Why?: The original midnight movie about everyone's favorite Transylvanian transexual, presented with a live assist from Colorado's Elusive Ingredient. More info/Tickets: LandmarkTheatres.com
Mile High Sci Fi presents Runaway Where: Starz FilmCenter, Tivoli building on the Auraria Campus When: 8 p.m. Friday, September 24 and 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday, September 25 Why?:Join the Mile High Sci Fi crew as they rip into Tom Selleck and his luscious '80s mustache in this justly forgotten robots-gone-wild B-movie. Oh, and if you yourself are sporting as sweet 'stache, tickets are two-for-one. More info/tickets: DenverFilm.org
From The Files of Albert Black Where: Thin Man parking lot, 2015 East 17th Avenue When: Wednesday, September 29 at dusk (9 p.m.-ish) Why?: Information on this one is scarce, but it does say World Premiere -- Denver Animator: CHAIN SAW, so if you want to catch a free world premiere of an animated film, this is your chance. As always, it is free but bring a chair or blanket to sit on, though. More info/Tickets: ThinManTavern.com
