Pick of the Week:The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Where: Bindery | Space, 2180 Stout Street When: 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 11 Why?: Well, because it's one of the best horror films ever made, that's why. Controversial, gruesome and pretty goddamn funny to boot, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the rare "greatest films ever" that actually lives up to the hype. Plus, there's free popcorn and beer (at the movie, not in the movie -- in the movie, there's just lots of hippies getting cut up with a chainsaw)! If you've seen it, you know why it's awesome. If you haven't, what on earth are you waiting for? (Read more about the See You Next Wednesday: Slasher, Splatter & Horror Flicks series that this film is a part of.) Velvet Goldmine Where: Starz FilmCenter, Tivoli building on the Auraria Campus When: 10 p.m. Friday August 6 and Saturday August 7 Why?: It's a glamtastic retelling/reinterpretation of the rock and roll legends Iggy Pop and David Bowie -- not like it was, but like it should have been. Also, the soundtrack is freaking amazing and this is a genuine modern cult flick. And Friday at 8:30 p.m. there's a preparty with free pizza and beer. Free beer, do you hear me? What could be more rock and roll than that? But make sure and put on your glam finest before you go; you don't want to be underdressed More info/tickets: DenverFilm.org
The Cremaster Cycle Where: Chez Artiste, 2800 South Colorado Boulevard at Amherst When: One week run starting Friday, August 6 Why?: Well, it's kind of hard to explain. It's a series of five parts by artist/filmmaker Matthew Barney. And there are zeppelins and Celtic mysticism and Busby Berkeley-style showgirls and Norman Mailer as Harry Houdini. Also ogres, Freemasons, color-coded motorcycle teams and a lot of pigeons. So, pretty much like you always imagined psychedelic drugs to be, but they never were (unless you got the really good ones). Also, it's supposedly never going to come out on DVD, so it may be your only chance. You can learn more at the official Cremaster website. More info/tickets: LandmarkTheatres.com
Muppet Treasure Island Where: Esquire Theatre, 600 Downing Street When: Midnight Friday, August 6 and Saturday, August 7 Why?: Well, you either love the Muppets and have fond nostalgic feelings about this movie (thus you're going), or you don't (and thus you aren't going). But even if you never saw it, it's the Muppets, and they are riffing on Treasure Island, so it's hard to go wrong. Also, it has Tim Curry, which is almost reason enough to see any film. Tokyo Godfathers Where: Thin Man parking lot, 2015 East 17th Avenue When: Wednesday, August 6 at dusk (9 p.m. ish) Why?: Because director Satoshi Kon is not only a genius, but a mad genius, and the film world needs more of those. This anime follows a trio of eccentric street people as they try to find the parents of an abandoned newborn. Plus, it's free! Bring a chair or blanket to sit on, though.
