We're #1! Come see the best roller derby league in the country in action when the Rocky Mountain Roller Girls (2010 Women's Flat Track Derby Association national champions) open their 2011 season on Saturday at the Fillmore at 7 p.m. The bout pits two of the league's teams - Dooms Daisies vs. Red Ridin' Hoods -- against each other as the league begins warming up to defend the title.

But that's not all...

Calling all ams! Winter Park is hosting USASA-sanctioned Slopestyle contests this weekend as part of the Rocky Mountain Snowboard & Freeski Series, with snowboarding on Saturday and Freeskiing on Sunday in the Dark Territory and Rail Yard terrain parks. Come back February 25-27 for the USASA boardercross races. Be prepared! We've already had three avalanche fatalities in Colorado this season, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, and at least 22 winter sports enthusiasts caught in slides: If you're heading out into the backcountry, or even getting big powder days in-bounds, then learning to use your beacon and other gear is a must. Arapahoe Basin hosts its 9th annual Beacon Bowl and Avalanche Awareness Day on Saturday, the perfect opportunity to practice your skills (and find some backcountry buddies who've proven themselves in battle). The $25 registration fee benefits the CAIC and includes a raffle ticket and New Belgium Beer at the après-ski party. Go for the Gold! The Frisco Nordic Center hosts the 41st annual Frisco Gold Rush on Sunday, with a 5K/10K Classic Cross Country Ski race at 9 a.m., followed by 5K, 10K and 20K Skate Ski races and the 7K TUBBS Snowshoe race. The event, which benefits the Summit Nordic Ski Club, is being billed as "Colorado's oldest XC Ski & Snowshoe event." Run for it! Beaver Creek's Snowshoe Adventure Series continues on Sunday with 5K and 10K races and a 1K kids' race in Creekside Park. There are cash and merchandise prizes and a post-race raffle. The series concludes on March 6 with the Jeremy Wright North American Snowshoe Championships.
