Three is a Magic Number

"After years of people in Denver saying, 'God, we wish we could hear you guys,' and people going to absurd lengths to wrap wires around their houses to pick up our signal, or driving their car and parking on a certain spot on a hill to hear a program, we took the plunge and bought an AM frequency," says KGNU interim station manager Sam Fuqua.

Three years and more than four million dollars later, KGNU — now at 88.5 FM in Boulder and 1390 AM in Denver — is fully wired and sharing the Micro Business Development Center at 700 Kalamath Street with indie television pals Denver Open Media. To celebrate its third birthday and meet local listeners face-to-face, the station is hosting tonight's third-anniversary Party on First Friday from 4 to 9 p.m. Things get started with an open house that features cake, drinks, tours and a silent auction. At 6 p.m., DJs Chris Nathan and Donovan Makha will spin outside while live bands perform and simulcast on KGNU and cable channel 57. Get more information at www.kgnu.org or by calling 303-449-4885.
