Time Warp

It’s debatable whether the “good old days” of the 1950s were really as golden as some folks remember. But there’s one aspect of that time about which everyone can wax nostalgic: the price of dining out. Can you imagine a $5 prime rib plate or a $1.50 martini? Wouldn’t it be nice if we could enjoy a fine dinner with yesterday’s prices on today’s paycheck?

The Junior Symphony Guild certainly thought so, and in honor of its fiftieth anniversary, it’s holding a week-long fundraiser, Fill Your Plate Just Like 1958, at Baur’s Ristorante, 1512 Curtis Street. For a donation of $58 per couple or $30 per single, diners can enjoy a special prix fixe menu time-warped to 2009 at 1950s prices. Baur’s owner/operator Jimmy Lambatos “went back into the archives of Baur’s from the ’50s and dug up old menus, and what the recipes were, and what the pictures were like, and that’s what he’s going to be working off,” explains the guild’s Carole Kramer. The dinner special starts tomorrow and runs through Saturday, March 21 (make reservations by calling 303-534-4842 or going to www.baursdenver.com). But from 3 to 6 p.m. today, a kickoff party will give diners a taste of what’s to come, with ’50s attire, music, heavy hors d’oeuvre and a cash bar featuring ’50s cocktails. Admission to the party is the same $30/$58 arrangement. Neato!
