That all changes today, when the juried show, Artists' Book Cornucopia, and In Retrospect: Artists' Books and Works on Paper, a traveling exhibition of works by East Coast book-arts heavyweights Ann Lovell, Maureen Cummins and Nava Atlas, open for viewing, filling both the main gallery and the smaller Reading Room at Abecedarian. Of the latter show, Bailey says, These three are artists with stellar reputations. Its really a coup for me to have this show in the gallery.
What makes artists books so compelling? Bailey cites their egalitarian potential as a more accessible art form and their interactive qualities: Its easy to fold up a lot of ideas into one small package, she explains. And these two shows will surely prove her point. Cornucopia alone features fifty books in all, created by 38 artists from across the nation, in all shapes, sizes and levels of complexity.
See the exhibits at your leisure through May 6 (it coincides with the opening of another book-art exhibit in May at the Denver Central Library) at the gallery, 910 Santa Fe Drive, Unit #101. Get information at http://abecedariangallery.com or call 303-340-2110.
