First Class Fashionista maven Lonza Dennis had a personal stake in mind when she put together tonight’s Denver Paint the Runway at the Denver Art Society. “My two oldest daughters excelled in math,” she begins. “My youngest struggled throughout high school, but she was a talented artist. She had been sketching fashion designs since she was four and making 3-D art out of cardboard. She was my creative child, and we knew she would be our non-traditional student. I began to notice early on that she processed and thought about things a little differently. Her thinking was more multidimensional; she had some great, fresh ideas. And after years of struggle and tears, she’s doing exceptionally well at Parsons School for Design.”

That experience led Dennis to search out charity recipients for a fashion event that would give back to both artists and creative children. And when the models start strutting the runway this evening, they’ll be doing it for the DAS and Camp ArtReach, both of which provide free art education to disadvantaged kids seeking avenues for self-expression. “We’re bringing in some of the biggest names in Denver fashion — people who are working all of the runways in Denver — and they’re all making new designs just for this show,” Den-nis promises. “And we’ll also have student designers from the Art Institute of Colorado. I wanted to help usher them into the fashion community.”

DAS will also host a live art auction of donated work, and the Renegade and Fort Collins breweries will offer beer tasting, Beauty Bar will provide inexpensive mini-spa services, and fashion-related vendors will be selling their wares.

Paint the Runway begins at 7 p.m. at the DAS, 734 Santa Fe Drive; admission ranges from $17.50 to $50, and bargain-priced $10 SRO tickets have just been added. Reserve yours at events.firstclassfashionista.com.
