Arvada Center art curator Collin Parson is pumped, and here’s why: Unbound: Sculpture in the Field, a show one might say he’s been training for all his life, debuts tonight in the center’s south field, featuring an installation of 27 works by Colorado sculptors. A sculptor himself, Parson, who grew up around his sculptor father Charles Parson’s studio and milieu of artist friends, not only knows his way around a statue, but is also more than knowledgeable about the local sculpture community.

And that ensures that Sculpture in the Field, an Arvada Center collaboration with the Museum of Outdoor Arts, will be nothing less than a royal court of Colorado’s best. In fact, finding artists to participate in the exhibition was really an easy task for Parson. “Finding the right spots for all of them in seventeen acres of flat field was the most difficult part,” he notes. “Not having a real landscape makes it difficult to hide them from each other.” It was Parson’s job to imagine a multiple placement that would allow each work to shine without competing with one another visually.

Sculpture in the Field opens at the Arvada Center, 6901 Wadsworth Boulevard in Arvada, with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m.; Parson optimistically sees the exhibition as a precursor to what might eventually become a permanent feature for the center: a sculpture garden and arts resource that fills an unclaimed cultural niche in the region. Visit the outdoor exhibit through October 5, and check out a series of companion exhibits on display indoors through the end of August. Admission is free; for information, visit arvadacenter.org or call 720-898-7200.
