Pond skimming, of course, involves skiing down a short hill, hitting a ramp and landing in a pond, then trying to stay upright for as long as possible. Patton says this years pond aka Lake Golden Peak is about 100 feet long, guaranteeing that just about every-one will end up in the drink (one competitor from last years splashdown spectacle made the highlight reel in ESPNs Top 10 Plays of the Week), adding that this years prizes include a 2011-2012 Epic Pass. The Golden Skimmer is a coveted title around these parts, and if you can win that Epic Pass youll be all set for next season. But youd better bring it: People go all out for this event, with crazy costumes and the works.
The event begins at 1:30 p.m. at Golden Peak; registration is $75, and the 75 competitor spots fill up fast. Visit www.vail.com/springback for more information.
