Although the Athena Project Festival, a celebration of the work of female artists, won’t debut until next summer, it’s launching its Plays in Progress series, featuring new works by six female playwrights, at 8 p.m. tonight at the Aurora Fox, 9900 East Colfax Avenue, starting with a reading of Clinnesha D. Sibley’s Tell Martha Not to Moan.

The series will present five more plays by local and national playwrights — Death by Hairbrush, by Tami Canaday; Marla and Her Prayers, by Kim Merrill; The Living, by Nina Miller; Race Relations, by Carrie Printz; and The Record Breakers, by Kendall Sherwood — over this weekend, then repeat the feat next weekend at the Fox and the weekend after at the Edge Theatre, 9797 West Colfax Avenue in Lakewood. The plays went through three rounds to make it this far, and audience members will get to offer more input through post-show sessions that will effectively make them temporary dramaturgs. “Most playwrights will agree that their plays aren’t really done until you get some sort of feedback from an audience,” says Athena Project founder Angela Astle. “A lot of plays live in the land of perpetual staged reading.”

But at least one of the plays will be showcased at the Athena Project Festival, alongside the works of visual artists and musicians — and audiences from all three weekends will vote for which script deserves the full production. Tickets for a single play reading are $10; purchase a PIP pass to see all six for $35. For a full schedule, tickets or more information about the Athena Project, go to www.athenaprojectfestival.org.
